The Trail of Blood

The Trail of Blood
The “Trail of Blood” is a concept within Landmark Baptist theology, asserting that true Baptist type churches have existed continuously since the time of Christ, maintaining independence from both the Roman Catholic Church and Protestant denominations. This perspective is rooted in the belief that an unbroken lineage of Bible-believing, autonomous churches has endured persecution throughout history. This perspective emphasizes the importance of continuity and doctrinal distinctiveness among historical independent church movements that may or may not have functioned close to practicing Jews, but were more aligned to frame their faith by a simple reading of the Bible and the Revelation of Mount Sinai. While this theory is widely criticized, I find value in recognizing groups that were often silenced and labeled by their persecutors rather than being able to define themselves, thus the chart above clearly identifies and links such groups together. Where did this impulse originate? That said, certain core beliefs resonate with free churches and simple Bible Believers: • Local church autonomy • Believer’s baptism by immersion • Rejection of national religion and ecumenical ties over revelation and mission, yet open to evangelical and missionary alliances • An observant identity focused on the Great Commission and also resistence to economic coercion!
